Comedy by the slice: Pedone's Pizza in Hermosa Beach

Tonight I’m driving out to Huntington Beach, CA to perform in the open mic at Pedone’s Pizza. 1332 Hermosa Avenue in Hermosa Beach, CA, for those of you in the area who really want something to do tonight.

It’s a new open mic. This is the 2nd week. I don’t know the guy who runs it or any of the comics in the show with me. I have to trust that all will be well.

I got an email out of the blue a couple of weeks ago from Ryan Bozsan, announcing the new open mic and that he’s booking. Unusual right away is the idea of a “booked” open mic. Booked open mics for stand-up comics are somewhat rare. Usually you stick the mic on the stage, send an email, a tweet, an update and hope the comics come. Often you don’t want to risk turning comics away since so many are likely to flake anyway. After all, we’re not getting paid. They may not even get a free drink or a slice. Let me add that as beautiful as Hermosa beach may be, it’s far from the civilization we call LA. So booking is an interesting strategy. I am however honored to be included in this stand-up comedy moment in history.

Booking seems logical if you’re trying to have a better show until the audience catches on and starts to come on their on. that way you ensure that comedians are there and the show is worthwhile for the audience. I suppose I should give myself the the benefit of the doubt and assume that Ryan knows me even though I don’t know who he is. Maybe I was booked because I’m good.

What I’m hoping for is to have a decent set, try out some new material and get a slice of pizza. Comedy is not complicated. I’ll tell jokes for food.

I’ll arrange my set list, pick out the funny clothes, shave, shower, PBJ and hit the traffic. What could possibly go wrong?
